    What UL 325 Requires

UL 325 is the safety standard published by Underwriters Laboratories that governs the design, construction, and performance of commercial and residential door operators — including overhead door operators, high-speed door controls, rolling steel door operators, and gate operators.

Any electrically powered door operator installed in a commercial or industrial facility in the United States must meet UL 325 requirements. The standard covers entrapment protection, closing force limits, safety sensor requirements, and control wiring specifications.

In California, UL 325 compliance is enforced through the California Electrical Code and is a standard condition of building permit sign-off for new door operator installations.

    What UL 325 Covers

    Entrapment Protection

All commercial door operators must include at least one form of entrapment protection — typically photoelectric sensors (photo eyes) that reverse the door if the beam is interrupted during closing.

    Closing Force Limits

UL 325 limits the maximum closing force a door operator may apply. Operators that exceed these limits must be adjusted or replaced to prevent entrapment injury.

    Auto-Reverse Function

Commercial & Industrial door operators must automatically reverse direction if the door contacts an obstruction during closing. This function must be tested and documented.

    Control Wiring

UL 325 specifies control wiring requirements for commercial operators, including protection against unintended activation and proper grounding.

    Limit Switch Calibration

Open and close limit switches must be properly set so the door stops at the correct position — over-travel in either direction creates safety risk and premature mechanical wear.

    Warning Labels & Signage

UL 325-listed operators must carry appropriate safety labels, and installations must include warning signage visible to door users.

    Our UL 325 Safety Verification

When InSev Tech services a commercial door operator, our technicians verify UL 325 safety functions as part of every service call — not just on new installations.

    We test and document

    • Photo eye alignment and beam continuity verification
    • Auto-reverse function under contact obstruction
    • Closing force measurement and adjustment
    • Limit switch calibration (open and close positions)
    • Control wiring condition
    • Warning label presence

For facilities requiring written documentation — including those undergoing insurance audits or permit inspections — we provide a service report that records all safety functions tested and the results found.
