Key ADA Requirements for Commercial & Industrial Doors

    Door Width

ADA requires a minimum 32-inch clear opening width for accessible doors, with 36 inches recommended for primary entrances and accessible routes.

    Opening Force

Interior doors (non-fire rated) must require no more than 5 lbs of force to open. Exterior doors have no force limit but must be operable with one hand.

    Threshold Height

Door thresholds may not exceed 1/2 inch in height. Beveled thresholds up to 3/4 inch are permitted with a 1:2 bevel ratio.

    Maneuvering Clearances

ADA requires specific clearance zones on both sides of accessible doors — dimensions vary based on door approach direction and whether the door swings toward or away from the user.

    Hardware

Door hardware must be operable with one hand without tight grasping, pinching, or twisting. Lever handles, push plates, and automatic operators meet this requirement.

    Automatic Door Operators

Power-operated doors must meet ANSI/BHMA A156.19 standards for speed, force, and safety sensor requirements.

California Building Code vs Federal ADA

California's accessibility standards (CBC Chapter 11B) are in some cases more stringent than federal ADA requirements. For example, California requires automatic door operators in certain public-facing commercial applications where federal ADA does not.

InSev Tech's technicians are familiar with both federal ADA and California Building Code accessibility requirements for door systems.
