Hydraulic cylinder repair — restoring full lift capacity

Dock levelers are the highest-utilization piece of loading equipment in the warehouse — every truck that pulls up depends on the leveler operating safely under full pallet load. Hydraulic cylinder leaks, pump motor burnouts, worn lip mechanisms, and broken deck springs on mechanical units are the failures we see every week across Southern California. Our service vehicles stock the common failure-mode parts for Rite-Hite, Kelley, Blue Giant, Pentalift, Serco, and every major dock leveler brand.

Lip mechanism service — all hydraulic and mechanical brands

Lip mechanism failures — bent lips, worn lip cylinders, broken lip latches — are one of the most common calls after cylinder leaks. A misaligned or short-cycling lip creates a trip hazard between the trailer bed and the dock floor and puts forklift operators at risk. InSev Tech repairs and replaces lip assemblies, latches, and cylinders on every major hydraulic and mechanical leveler series.

What's Wrong With Your Dock Leveler?

Common dock leveler and dock position symptoms, what they usually mean, and what we do.

    • Leveler won't rise

Usually a power, control box, pump motor, low-oil or valve fault. We rule out power and controls first, then diagnose the hydraulic or mechanical lift system.

    • Lip won't extend or keeps falling

Points to a lip cylinder, hinge, latch or valve problem, or debris in the hinge. We service the lip assembly and clear obstructions.

    • Leveler stuck below dock level

Often a hydraulic, spring or hold-down fault, or an obstruction in the pit. We take the position out of service, clear the pit and restore travel.

    • Deck twisted or cracked

Structural damage from overload or impact. The unit must not be used until it is repaired and its capacity verified.

    • Won't hold position / drifts down

Typically a cylinder seal leak or failed check valve. We reseal or replace the cylinder and hold-test the deck.

    • Damaged bumpers exposing the building

Worn or missing bumpers let trailers strike the dock face. We replace bumpers, often with leveler or seal work in the same visit.

    • Worn seals letting in weather and pests

Torn pads or shelter curtains leave gaps around the trailer. We replace pads, curtains and frames to close the opening.

Hydraulic Motor & Power Unit Service

Every hydraulic dock leveler runs on an electric motor driving a hydraulic pump. When that power unit fails, the leveler won't respond to the push button and the dock position stops taking trailers. InSev Tech diagnoses the full hydraulic circuit — motor, pump, solenoids, and control wiring — before replacing any component.

    Pump Motor Replacement

1 HP single-phase and three-phase pump motors for Rite-Hite RHH-4000, McGuire H Series, Blue Giant, Kelley, and Pentalift power units — stocked for same-day replacement at most SoCal locations.

    Solenoid Valve Service

A stuck solenoid raises the deck but won't extend the lip, or lets the deck drift under load. Valve cleaning, testing, and replacement.

    Pump Rebuild or Replace

Internal pump wear causes fluid bypass, slow travel, and loss of holding pressure. We rebuild repairable pumps rather than defaulting to full assembly replacement.

    Velocity Safety Stop

Free-fall protection is an OSHA-critical device. Velocity fuse and tamperproof safety stop testing documented after every power unit repair.

Edge-of-Dock (EOD) Leveler Repair & Replacement

Not every Southern California dock has a leveler pit. Older Los Angeles County and Vernon/Commerce industrial buildings, surface-mount dock positions, and light-industrial buildings commonly use edge-of-dock (EOD) levelers — a compact steel unit bolted to the dock face that bridges a short height range between the dock floor and the trailer bed. EOD units are simpler than pit levelers, but they take the same forklift traffic, and when the lip, hinge, or springs fail, the position is unsafe to run.

InSev Tech repairs and replaces EOD levelers as a standalone call or alongside dock seal, bumper, and restraint work at the same position — including capacity verification, so the unit actually matches the forklift and load weight crossing it.

    Lip & Hinge Plate Repair

The lip and hinge plate take every forklift wheel crossing. Bent lips, cracked welds, and worn hinge pins are the most common EOD failures we see — we replace the lip assembly and hinge hardware and verify the lip sits flush on the trailer bed through the full working height range.

    Deck & Frame Repair

Cracked deck plate, deformed side frames, and failed dock face welds from repeated overload or trailer impact. We assess whether the unit is structurally repairable or should be replaced, and we inspect the dock face concrete and anchors behind it.

    Spring & Counterbalance Service

Mechanical EOD levelers rely on compression springs to lift the deck and hold position. Broken or fatigued springs make the unit heavy to raise or cause it to drop under load — we replace springs and restore proper counterbalance.

    Anchors, Bumpers & Alignment

EOD levelers depend on correct bumper projection to keep the trailer at the right distance from the dock face. We replace loose or pulled anchors, reset bumper height and projection, and align the unit so the lip lands correctly instead of overhanging the trailer edge.

EOD leveler past economical repair? We quote a like-for-like replacement or a pit-style leveler upgrade where the dock structure and trailer mix justify it — see door & dock installation.

Dock Bumpers — The Part Everyone Forgets Until They Need It

Every loading dock position has dock bumpers — the rubber or urethane pads mounted on the dock face that absorb the impact of trailers backing in. When bumpers wear down, compress permanently, or detach from the dock face, the trailer makes contact with the building structure directly — causing dock face damage, misalignment of dock seals, and in high-cycle facilities, progressive structural damage to the dock pit and surrounding concrete.

Bumpers are a consumable — they wear at a rate proportional to your daily trailer cycle volume. In high-cycle Inland Empire and Los Angeles County distribution facilities, bumpers typically need replacement every 2-5 years. InSev Tech replaces dock bumpers as a standalone service or combined with dock leveler, dock seal, or vehicle restraint service in a single visit.

    Bumper Types We Replace

    Molded Rubber Bumpers

The most common dock bumper type — solid rubber pads mounted directly to the dock face with anchor bolts. Available in standard and heavy-duty profiles. Replacement includes removing worn bumpers, inspecting anchor points and dock face concrete, and installing new bumpers to manufacturer spec.

Most common failure modes: permanent compression (bumper no longer protects dock face height), torn or missing anchor bolts, or surface deterioration from hydraulic fluid contact.

    Laminated Dock Bumpers

Laminated bumpers use multiple layers of rubber bonded together — providing greater energy absorption than solid rubber at high-impact dock positions where heavy trailers back in at speed.

Common in high-volume distribution centers and cold storage facilities with refrigerated trailer traffic. Replacement scope same as molded rubber — anchor inspection, dock face assessment, and new bumper installation.

    Steel-Faced Bumpers

Steel-faced bumpers add a steel plate over the rubber core — providing maximum durability at the highest-cycle dock positions and protecting against trailer underride contact with dock face hardware.

Common at Inland Empire mega-distribution facilities with 30+ daily trailer movements per dock position. InSev Tech replaces steel-faced bumpers and inspects the dock face mounting surface for structural damage.

    Custom & Non-Standard Bumpers

Older industrial buildings and non-standard dock configurations sometimes require custom bumper profiles — wider, taller, or different projection than standard catalog items. InSev Tech assesses your dock face geometry and sources the correct bumper profile for your specific dock opening.
