Your Loading Dock Is an FDA Inspection Target

Under the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) and 21 CFR Part 117 (Current Good Manufacturing Practice for Human Food), food facilities are required to maintain physical barriers that prevent pest entry, contamination, and temperature excursions at all points of entry — including loading docks.

FDA inspectors routinely cite facilities for dock door deficiencies including torn dock seals, gaps between the trailer and the dock opening, non-functional dock doors that cannot be fully closed, and inadequate pest exclusion at dock positions.

InSev Tech serves food & beverage manufacturers, cold storage operators, and 3PL facilities handling food products across Southern California — and our parent company NLY Group has maintained service relationships with leading food facility operators for nearly 10 years.

What FDA Looks for at Your Loading Dock

    Pest Exclusion

21 CFR 117.20 requires that buildings exclude pests. Loading dock seals, dock shelters, and door bottom seals are the primary pest exclusion barrier at dock positions. Torn or missing seals are a direct cGMP citation.

    Temperature Control

For cold storage and temperature-controlled facilities, dock doors and seals must maintain the required temperature at the dock face during loading and unloading operations.

    Physical Condition of Doors

Doors must be maintained in good repair and capable of being fully closed. Non-functional or damaged doors that cannot seal the opening are a facility maintenance deficiency under 21 CFR 117.20(b).

    High-Speed Doors

High-speed fabric or rigid doors at dock entrances and cold storage openings reduce the duration of each opening cycle — directly reducing pest ingress risk and temperature fluctuation.

    Dock Seal Integrity

Dock seals and shelters must contact the trailer body on all sides to prevent gaps. Worn, torn, or compressed foam seals that no longer contact the trailer must be replaced.

    Documentation

FSMA requires written preventive controls programs. Documenting dock door and seal maintenance as part of your facility maintenance program supports FSMA compliance records.
